About Atheistwiki [Edit]

Welcome to the AtheistWiki!

The purpose of the AtheistWiki is to provide a starting point for those searching for freethought information. Whether you're already an atheist, agnostic, or freethinker or whether you're just looking for the truth (or something close to it) , we hope you enjoy the site and find something interesting.

Please be aware of our Community Standards. If you are very new to wikis we recommend that you read our Newcomer's guide which gives a lot of advice about wiki-editing.

Mission statement

  • To provide a meeting place for atheists and to help them get in contact with local groups.
  • To generate a reference site with information about atheist thoughts and values.
  • To highlight the many failures of religion and religious thought.
  • To promote an atheist viewpoint.

Statement of Permanence

AtheistWiki was founded in 2008 and has sufficient funding to continue for the next 10 years, or until Jesus returns. (At that point I'll claim that I had nothing to do with this site.) Until then, I want to reassure you that your efforts here will not disappear into the cold, dark web. While we are growing slowly, I will personally guarantee that AtheistWiki will continue to be here for years to come. --LocalAtheist 23:39, 15 February 2009 (EST)

Who this site is for?[edit]

This site is primarily for those who do not believe god exists or who feel there is no evidence god exists. It also aims to put atheists in contact with local groups.

Point of view

AtheistWiki is not "Neutral Point of View". It has an " Atheist Point of View".

Consequently, while we welcome debate on all the topics we cover, it is unlikely that edits which promote a religious viewpoint will remain for long.

Items of note[edit]

Please consider our article on atheists and agnostics and decide where you stand.

What is a wiki?[Edit]

You are reading a wiki now, it is a repository of knowledge which can be edited by anybody - including you. The most famous wiki is Wikipedia, but there are many others. This kind of collaborative venture has proved to be amazingly successful.

Why use a wiki?

A wiki has an advantage over a newsgroup or a forum in that the information contained in the wiki is continually being built on and updated. In contrast, a forum thread excites interest for a month or so at most before being forgotten.

I've got a question.

General questions about this wiki should be posted in the Main page discussion section here.

Great! I want to edit Atheistwiki [Edit]

Don't worry if you have never edited a wiki before - it is very easy.
  • Click here to go to our simple starter page.
  • On the other hand you may want to go straight to the sandbox and play around there - you can't break anything.
  • Or just ask a question.

How can I explore the wiki?

  • You can enter a term into the search box to the left - if the article doesn't exist you can create it from there as well.
  • You can have a look at the categories and select from there.

Standards of debate

When editing the most important principle is to be polite when you are discussing contentious topics. As a general rule of thumb you should respond to what the person says and not to the person. In other words you are quite welcome to say "That idea is stupid, because ...." You should avoid saying "You are stupid."
